French Onion Beef and Potato Bake

February 22, 2023

This French Onion Beef and Potato Bake is a dish that I just came up with one day, and it turned out to be absolutely delicious! It is easy to throw together and doesn’t have an ingredient list a mile long. It was enjoyed by my whole family, which is rare, and is definitely something I will keep on the dinner rotation!

French Onion Beef and Potato Bake is a relatively inexpensive meal, and it will feed about 4-6 adults. If you like this type of dish, here are some more that I think you will enjoy!

What are the ingredients?

  • 1.5 lbs of ground beef
  • 2 lbs of russet potatoes
  • 1 packet of French Onion Soup Mix
  • 8 oz of mozzarella cheese
  • 4 oz of smoked gouda cheese
  • 2-3 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 small yellow onion
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • And some seasonings

Can this be prepared ahead of time?

I do not recommend preparing this ahead of time because you want the potatoes to be crispy. Allowing it to sit overnight will make them soggy.

Can it be frozen?

Again, I do not recommend freezing it due to the consistency of the potatoes. But if you do wish to freeze it, just be sure to keep in an airtight container for no more than 2-3 months. Allow it to thaw and reheat in the microwave if possible.

To start, you will want to dice your potatoes into bite-sized pieces. In a bowl, drizzle them with a small amount of olive oil, and season however you like. I used a salt, pepper garlic blend.

Toss them in your air fryer basket and air fry at 400 for 25-30 minutes or until crispy.

What if I don’t have an air fryer?

No problem!!! If you do not have an air fryer, prepare the potatoes in a skillet. You will use the oil and seasonings, and will just want to keep stirring them until they are nice and golden and crispy!

While the potatoes are cooking, brown the ground beef with the onion and garlic. When it is finished cooking, drain the grease if desired. I always say this is not a necessary step, but a preference. I did not drain it for this recipe.

Now you will add the onion soup mix, 1 tbs of Worcestershire sauce and 1/4 cup water.

Add in those crispy potatoes and give it a good mix.

Top with the cheese and some dried parsley flakes and bake for about 10-15 minutes. Just until the cheese is good and melted.

You can enjoy this as a stand-alone dish, but I like to have it with a side of green beans.

If you do try this recipe, I would love to hear from you, so please leave a comment and a rating as it helps so much!

Equipment

  • 1 Air Fryer If you do not have one, the potatoes can be prepared in a skillet
  • 1 Cast Iron Skillet or oven safe skilet or you can transfer everything to a baking dish
  • 1 Conventional Oven

Ingredients

For the Potatoes

  • 2 lbs Russet Potatoes, chopped into bite sized pieces
  • 2-3 tbs Olive Oil
  • Salt, Pepper and Garlic Blend

For the Beef Mixture

  • 1.5 lbs Ground Beef
  • 1 Yellow Onion, Diced
  • 2-3 Garlic Cloves, minced
  • 1 packet French Onion Soup Mix
  • 1 tbs Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 8 oz Mozzarella cheese, grated
  • 4 oz Smoked Gouda cheese, grated
  • 1 tsp Dried Parsley optional

Instructions

  • In a bowl, drizzle the olive oil over the potatoes and season with the listed spices. I do not measure. You can taste them when they are done, but you do not want them to be too salty.
  • Make sure all the potatoes are coated well and air fry at 400 for 20-25 minutes or until crispy. Make sure to shake once or twice while they are cooking.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  • While the potatoes are cooking, brown the ground beef with the onion and garlic.
  • When the beef is finished cooking, add the soup packet, Worcestershire sauce and water. Mix well and let simmer on low for a couple minutes.
  • When the potatoes are done, mix them in with the beef. Top with the cheese and dried parsley and bake for about 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

This was a really great recipe! I don’t know why I love the Lipton soup mix with basically anything that has ground beef and potatoes but this combines everything to make a really yummy dish! Easy and delicious!

I agree! That Lipton onion soup mix is just one of those “can’t live without” products! So versatile and so delicious!

  • Is there a make-ahead and reheat option available for this recipe??

    Thank you in advance

This could be made in its entirety and reheated in a microwave, but keep in mind that the potatoes just won’t be as crispy! That would be the only issue though 🙂

I’m making this tonight and I’m super excited for the final finish. I was wondering, if I don’t have French onion soup mix packet could I substitute with a can of French onion soup? I was thinking this would still work but maybe have more flavor and a bit saucier. Let me know whatcha think, please.

Hi Christine! I am so sorry I wasn’t able to reply when you posted this, I have been away from my computer for a few days. I am sure the soup would work! Let me know if you tried it and how it turned out!

I made this and am eating it right now. I didn’t even add the cheese and it’s delicious! The only thing I added was some white pepper. Will make again! Thanks!

      Hi Wendy,

I am glad you love it! I agree that the cheese is not necessary, but we are a cheese-loving family lol! White pepper does sound like a great addition!
