Spinach and Artichoke Bread

Spinach and Artichoke Bread

Let me just say that this Spinach and Artichoke Bread is one of the most incredible appetizers I have ever made! I have always loved spinach and artichoke dip and I have taken it to a lot of parties. But taking a warm dip means carrying a crockpot and monitoring it all night to ensure that it isn’t burning. I wanted to come up with a way that I could take it to the party, set it out and forget about it!

So, I decided to take a chance, and I bought some loaves of French bread, baked it right on the bread, and it was an ABSOLUTE hit! It was the first thing to disappear from the snack table and EVERYONE raved to me about it. Since then, I have had several requests for it for upcoming parties. So don’t hesitate to make this. It is easy and oh so delicious! And be sure to have the recipe handy, because you WILL be asked for it!

How to Make Spinach And Artichoke Bread

Spinach and Artichoke Bread

The dip consists of cream cheese, mayo, sour cream, garlic, smoked gouda, sharp cheddar, artichoke hearts, spinach, and red pepper flakes. The exact measurements will be in the recipe below.

Once you have all of the ingredients together, you need to mix them up. I find this easiest with my stand mixer. If you do not have one, a hand mixer will work as will a good old fashioned mixing spoon! Mix until it becomes a smooth and creamy consistency.

This recipe is enough for 3 loaves of French bread. I do believe Italian bread will work just as well. You want to slice them down the middle and cut them in half. (I bought the bread at Walmart in the bakery section and it was just around $1 a loaf!)

Then you will spread the mixture evenly over each half of the loaves of bread.

Place them on a foil-lined cookie sheet and bake them at 400 degrees for about 15-20 minutes. You want the cheese in the dip tp be completely melted and you also want the bread to be a bit crusty.

Let it cool slightly, slice it up and enjoy! (I filmed this the day before the party to make sure it was going to be good, so that’s why you only see one loaf of bread in this recipe.)

Ingredients

  • 3 loaves French or Italian Bread I recommend buying the fresh made bread from the store bakery
  • 1 Block Cream Cheese, softened
  • 1/2 Cup Mayonnaise
  • 1/2 Cup Sour Cream
  • 4 Garlic Cloves, minced
  • 1 Cup Smoked Gouda Cheese, shredded
  • 1 Cup Sharp Cheddar Cheese, shredded
  • 8 oz Artichoke Hearts, drained and chopped
  • 10 oz Package of frozen Spinach, thawed and drained
  • 1 tsp Red Pepper Flakes, optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • In a large bowl, mix together all of the ingredients (except the bread) until it is a smooth and creamy consistency. I used a stand mixer, but a hand mixer or even a spoon will work just fine!
  • Slice the bread loaves in half and evenly distribute a thick layer of the mixture on each one.
  • Place on a foil or parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes. It is done when the cheese is melted and the bread is slightly crusty.
  • Slice it up and enjoy!

Notes

The dip mixture can be prepared the day before, and stored in the fridge in an airtight container. You will need to let it come to room temperature before spreading it on the bread, or it will be way too hard to spread.
If you want, you can omit the bread and use this as a dip. Just prepare everything the same, but put it in an 8×11  baking dish and bake at 400 for about 20 minutes.
If you are transporting this somewhere, place it in a large pan and cover with aluminum foil.
