How to Make Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Start by adding the ground beef to a mixing bowl along with the breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, steak seasoning, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix everything gently with your hands just until combined—overmixing can make the patties tough.

This is the seasoning I used. But you can use any burger or steak blend!

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties.

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about three minutes per side, just until they develop a nice brown crust. They do not need to be cooked through at this stage. Remove them to a plate and set aside.

In the same skillet, add the butter followed by the diced onion. You can certainly slice the onion if you prefer but I am not a fan of the texture! Season lightly with black pepper and cook over low to medium heat for 12 to 15 minutes. You’re not looking to fully caramelize the onions—just soften them and develop a nice golden color without burning.

Once the onions are ready, whisk together the brown gravy mix and water directly in the skillet. Increase the heat to medium-high and stir until the gravy thickens. And any brown gravy will work. I have included instructions for making homemade gravy down below!

Nestle the hamburger steaks back into the gravy, spooning some over the top of each one. Cover the skillet, reduce the heat to low, and let everything simmer for about 10 minutes until the patties are cooked through and tender.

Serve hot over mashed potatoes or rice with your favorite vegetable on the side.

It is especially good with my creamy garlic mashed potatoes!

How to Make Homemade Onion Gravy (Optional)

If you’d rather skip the gravy packets, it’s easy to make your own.

After sautéing the onions, add 1 additional tablespoon of butter to the skillet. Sprinkle in ¼ cup flour and stir to coat the onions. Cook for about one minute to remove the raw flour taste.

Slowly whisk in 2 cups beef broth, then add 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce and black pepper to taste. Stir continuously over medium heat until a smooth gravy forms and thickens. Once the gravy is ready, return the hamburger steaks to the pan and continue with the simmering step as written above.

Tips for Success

  • Don’t overmix the meat—gentle mixing keeps the patties tender
  • Diced onions work great if you’re not a fan of sliced onions
  • Let the patties finish cooking in the gravy for maximum flavor
  • This reheats well, making it great for leftovers

Serving Suggestions

  • Over mashed potatoes or rice
  • With buttered corn, green beans, peas, or carrots
  • Add a slice of buttered white bread or dinner rolls to soak up the gravy
