School Lunch Pizza (Easy Cafeteria Pizza Recipe)

Table of contents
Intro
There’s something about school lunch pizza that just sticks with you. Maybe it was the rectangle slices, the gooey melted cheese, or that unique meat topping that somehow tasted different from every pizza restaurant in town.
For years I thought the secret was Italian sausage. I tried Italian sausage. I tried breakfast sausage. I even mixed different meats together hoping I’d finally recreate that cafeteria pizza flavor I remembered growing up.
Nothing was quite right.
Then one day it hit me—it wasn’t the sausage I was missing. It was the fennel.
That one simple ingredient completely changed everything.
Instead of using sausage, this recipe starts with seasoned ground beef, then whole fennel seeds are sprinkled over the top before adding the cheese. As the pizza bakes, those little bursts of fennel give it that unmistakable school lunch pizza flavor without overpowering the rest of the pizza.
The best part? It’s incredibly easy to make.
Using refrigerated pizza crust means you can have this nostalgic favorite on the table in under 30 minutes, and honestly…I think it tastes even better than I remember.
If you grew up looking forward to pizza day in the cafeteria, I have a feeling this recipe is going to bring back some great memories.

- Ready in about 30 minutes.
- Made with simple, easy-to-find ingredients.
- Perfect for feeding a family.
- Great for meal prep and leftovers.
- Reheats great in both the microwave and air fryer.
- Uses refrigerated pizza crust for a shortcut that doesn’t sacrifice flavor.
- The whole fennel seeds add that nostalgic flavor everyone remembers.
Ingredients
- Jus-Rol Family Size Pizza Crust (14.1 ounces) – This family-size refrigerated crust fits an 18 x 13-inch sheet pan perfectly and creates that thin, chewy cafeteria-style crust. Another 14-ounce refrigerated pizza crust can also be used if needed.
- Ground beef – I used one pound of ground beef and broke it into very fine crumbles for that authentic school lunch pizza texture.
- Garlic powder – Adds savory flavor without overpowering the meat.
- Onion powder – Gives the beef classic pizza seasoning.
- Dried oregano – A simple herb that adds just the right amount of Italian flavor.
- Salt – Enhances the overall flavor.
- Black pepper – Adds a little warmth without making the pizza spicy.
- Pizza sauce – A 14-ounce jar of your favorite pizza sauce. I used Prego, but any brand will work.
- Whole fennel seeds – The secret ingredient! Sprinkling them over the meat instead of mixing them in lets them stay whole while adding little bursts of classic cafeteria pizza flavor throughout every bite.
- Whole milk mozzarella cheese – Two 8-ounce bags create that thick, melty layer of cheese that makes this pizza so nostalgic.
How to Make School Lunch Pizza

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
Line an 18 x 13-inch sheet pan with parchment paper if needed. If you’re using the Jus-Rol pizza crust, simply unroll it directly onto the sheet pan using the parchment paper included in the package. I did cut off the excess paper on the ends.
Bake the crust for about 7 minutes until it just begins to set. This quick prebake helps keep the crust from becoming soggy after adding the toppings.

While the crust bakes, cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Use a potato masher while it cooks to break the beef into very fine crumbles, similar to the texture of classic school lunch pizza.
Season the beef with the garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir until everything is evenly combined.

Once the crust comes out of the oven, spread the pizza sauce evenly over the top, leaving just a small border around the edges.
Sprinkle on all but about ½ cup of the seasoned ground beef.
Scatter the whole fennel seeds evenly over the beef. Rather than mixing them into the meat, sprinkling them over the top allows them to stay whole and creates little bursts of that signature school lunch pizza flavor throughout the finished pizza.
Cover everything with the mozzarella cheese.
Finish by sprinkling the reserved ½ cup of ground beef over the cheese.

Return the pizza to the oven and bake for another 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and the edges are lightly golden brown.
Allow the pizza to cool for a few minutes before slicing into rectangles and serving.

Tips for Success
- Prebake the crust so it stays crisp.
- Use a potato masher to create extra-fine beef crumbles.
- Whole milk mozzarella gives the most authentic texture.
- Don’t skip the fennel seeds—they’re what make this recipe taste like school lunch pizza.
- Sprinkle the fennel over the beef instead of mixing it in. This keeps the seeds whole and lets their flavor shine through.
- A pizza cutter works great, but a large chef’s knife also makes nice, clean rectangles.

Can I use another refrigerated pizza crust? – Absolutely! I used Jus-Rol Family Size Pizza Crust because it fit my 18 x 13-inch sheet pan perfectly, but any refrigerated pizza crust that’s around 14 ounces will work.
Can I use Italian sausage instead of ground beef? – You can, but I actually think seasoned ground beef gives this pizza a much more authentic school lunch flavor.
Do I have to use fennel seeds? – I highly recommend them. They’re the ingredient that finally made this recipe taste like the cafeteria pizza I remember. They add a subtle sausage-like flavor without actually using sausage.
Why didn’t you mix the fennel into the beef? – I purposely sprinkled the fennel seeds over the meat before adding the cheese. Keeping them whole lets you see them on the finished pizza and gives you little bursts of flavor throughout every bite.
Should I drain the ground beef? – That’s completely up to you. I left the grease in for extra flavor, but you can drain it if you prefer.
Can I make this ahead of time? – Yes. You can cook and season the ground beef a day ahead, then assemble and bake the pizza when you’re ready.
