Oven Baked BBQ Ribs

Oven Baked BBQ Ribs

If you’ve ever craved tender, juicy barbecued ribs but thought you needed a smoker or fancy grill to achieve that mouth-watering flavor, think again! With just a few simple ingredients and your oven, you can create fall-off-the-bone baby back ribs that are sure to impress. In this blog post, I’ll walk you through my go-to recipe for oven-baked bbq ribs, sharing tips and tricks along the way. But if you are looking for a recipe for smoked ribs, I have a recipe for these Smoked BBQ Party Ribs here!

Ingredients You Will Need:

  • 1 rack of baby back ribs
  • Olive oil – (for rubbing)
  • Barbecue rub** (I recommend Kinder’s Hickory Brown Sugar)
  • BBQ sauce** (Sweet Baby Ray’s is my favorite)

This is just a summary, the full recipe is below! The first step to achieving tender ribs is to remove the membrane from the back of the ribs. This tough layer can prevent seasonings from penetrating and can lead to a chewy texture. Slide your fingers under the membrane, then use a paper towel to grip and pull it off completely. This little step might seem tedious, but it’s essential for great results.

Once the membrane is removed, it’s time to add flavor. Drizzle a bit of olive oil over the ribs as a binder to help the rub stick. Generously sprinkle your favorite barbecue rub over the ribs, ensuring an even coating for maximum flavor. The sugar in the rub will caramelize beautifully during cooking, adding to that deep BBQ flavor. I don’t use liquid smoke in my recipe because I feel it has an artificial flavor that isn’t necessary; the slow cooking process creates enough depth and richness in flavor.

Place the seasoned ribs on a large piece of aluminum foil, ensuring that the fat/meat side is facing up. Wrap them tightly with two layers of foil to create a sealed environment. This is crucial as it locks in moisture, helping to keep the ribs tender as they cook. Preheat your oven to 275°F (135°C). Cooking low and slow is key here. This method allows the collagen in the meat to break down gently, resulting in tender, juicy ribs. Place the wrapped ribs in the oven and bake for about 3 hours. The low temperature ensures that the meat cooks evenly without drying out.

Lastly

After 3 hours, carefully unwrap the foil (watch out for steam!). Brush a generous amount of your favorite BBQ sauce all over the ribs. At this point, you can add more rub if you desire a stronger flavor profile. Turn your oven’s broiler on high, and return the ribs to the oven for about 5 minutes. Keep a close eye on them, as you want the sauce to caramelize nicely without burning. This step adds a delicious glaze that’s simply irresistible.

Once the sauce is caramelized to your liking, remove the ribs from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, ensuring each bite is moist and flavorful.

And just like that, you have tender, flavorful BBQ ribs made right in the comfort of your own home!

I can eat ribs with pretty much any side dishes! They truly go with everything! But my favorites are this Creamy Stove Top Macaroni and Cheese, these Perfect Air Fryer Baked Potatoes, and these Texas Roadhouse Style Green Beans! And how about some Butterscotch Lush for dessert!

Ingredients

  • 1 Slab (approximately 3-5 lbs) Pork Baby Back Ribs
  • Olive Oil or any other neutral oil for rubbing on the ribs as a binder
  • Dry BBQ Rub – I love Kinders Hickory Brown Sugar but any will do
  • Barbecue Sauce – I like Sweet Baby Ray's, but again, any kind you like

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 275 degrees Fahrenheit or 135 degrees Celsius.
  • Remove the membrane from the back of the ribs. I have included pictures as well as a video above on how to easily do this.
  • Rub the ribs with the oil and season generously with the dry rub.
  • Wrap tightly in foil with the meat/fat side up. Do a double layer to ensure no leaks.
  • Bake for 3 hours. Remove from the oven and carefully unwrap them (watch our for steam!). Leave the foil underneath them, but leave it open.
  • Brush the barbecue sauce on them. Turn your oven to broil and stick the ribs under the broil for approximately 5 minutes. Keep a close eye on them, as you want the sauce to caramelize but not burn.
  • Remove them from the oven and let them rest for about 5 minutes. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

Cooking the ribs at a low temperature for an extended period is the secret to achieving that incredible tenderness. The slow cooking process breaks down the connective tissues without overcooking the meat, making it juicy and flavorful.
