Grandma's Old Fashioned Southern Style Potato Salad

My grandma’s Old Fashioned Southern Style Potato Salad is a recipe that is very near and dear to my heart! It was at every single family gathering we had, and still is! Every person in my family makes it this way. My aunt owns a family restaurant and this is on the menu. They sell out all the time. It is simple, but absolutely delicious! Every time I make this for a cookout or party, it gets devoured and I get asked for the recipe! And I have no problem sharing it with the world because that is exactly how my grandma would have wanted it!

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 lbs of potatoes – I prefer russet potatoes but any kind will work
  • 9-10 Hard boiled eggs
  • Mayonnaise
  • Dijon or yellow mustard
  • Sweet Pickle Relish
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Paprika – optional for garnish

How to Make Grandma’s Old Fashioned Southern Style Potato Salad:

Grandma's Old Fashioned Southern Style Potato Salad

You will start by washing and peeling the potatoes. (This might be one of the only recipes I actually peel potatoes for!) You will then boil them until fork tender. This takes about 10-12 minutes. Once they are cooked, drain them and add them to a large mixing bowl. Let them cool slightly for about 10 minutes.

Now add in your roughly chopped hard-boiled eggs, the mayo, mustard, relish and salt and pepper.

Now this is where some people (actually a lot of people on my social media channels) disagree! I use a potato masher to mix them up. But you only want to mash them enough that everything mixes together and you still have a lot of chunks of potatoes! If you like your potato salad with big chunks of potatoes, simply stir it instead of using the masher!

As you can see, it is mixed well, but there are still plenty of chunky potato pieces! At this point, you will want to taste it and add additional salt and pepper if needed. And that is all there is to it!

This last step is completely optional, but since we are making it exactly like my grandma did, I use about 3 more hard-boiled eggs. I slice them up and put them on top and sprinkle with some paprika. This is simply for presentation and nothing more, but you have to admit it does look pretty!

What is Grandma’s Old Fashioned Southern Style Potato Salad best served with?

ANYTHING! As I mentioned above, this dish was at ALL of our family gatherings! My absolute favorite is with some burgers and my Cowboy Style Baked Beans! It also pairs well with Dr. Pepper BBQ Pulled Pork, as well as BBQ Pulled Chicken and Garlic Butter Pork Chop Bites.
