Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Sausage and Potatoes

Fried Cabbage is a staple in our home. I make it probably 2-3 times per month. It’s rare that I make it exactly the same way twice, but the concept is always the same! Bacon is a necessity, then you can feel free to add whatever you like! The possibilities really are endless! Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Sausage and Potatoes is one of my favorite ways to make it.

How to Make Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Sausage and Potatoes

You will start by frying up some chopped up bacon in a large skillet.

When the bacon is crispy, use a slotted spoon to remove it from the pan and set it aside.

In that same pan, using the bacon grease, fry up 1 lb of andouille sausage until nice and crispy on both sides, then remove it and set it aside.

And still using that same pan, you will add 1.5 lbs of yukon gold potatoes, chopped into bite-sized pieces, and some dice onion and bell peppers.

Season those with salt, pepper, garlic powder and some slap ya mama or any other cajun seasoning. If you do not like it spicy, just omit the cajun seasoning.

Cook that down for about 5-7 minutes.

For the next step, you will add in 1/2 of a head of chopped up cabbage. This is why it is important to use a large pan. You might need to add in a little at a time, stirring each time until it is all in the pan. Don’t worry, it wilts down a lot.

Next you will put the lid on, reduce heat to low/medium and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. It is done when the cabbage is your desired tenderness.

Remember the bacon and sausage? Time to add that back in.

Mix it all up really well and it is time to eat!

Almost every time I make this I also whip up a batch of cheesy jalapeno cornbread! They just belong together!

I dislike instant rice. Do you thing long grain rice could be substituted in the One Pot Cheesy Taco Rice recipe?

    • A

Yes you can definitely use long grain. You will need to adjust the rice to broth ratio as well as the cook time but other that that it will work great!
