Southern Style Cabbage with Potatoes

This is one of my all-time favorite dishes! It combines several of my favorite foods into one and it is packed with flavor! I never make it the same way either. It’s just so versatile that you can literally add or take away pretty much anything you want. But the basis of the recipe is the same everytime. Oh, and it all cooks in one pan! Just one more reason to love it! It is a very hearty meal, so it doesn’t really need anything with it, but honestly, if you have a chance to eat cheesy jalapeno cornbread, why pass it up? It is the PERFECT companion to this dish. For this particular recipe, I only used bacon for the meat, but smoked sausage also goes so well with this. Just don’t be afraid to play around with it and make it your own! If you love cabbage like me, then I am sure however you make it, the end result will be amazing!

Start by browning 10 slices of bacon in a deep skillet. Once cooked, remove with a slotted spoon and set aside but do not drain the grease.

Add 1.5 lbs chopped yukon gold potatoes and 1 diced yellow onion. Season however you like. I used Kinder’s Garlic Sea Salt Butter seasoning, onion powder, salt and pepper and some Slap ya Mama. I don’t measure when seasoning, but I would guess around 1 tbs each. Cook for about 5-10 minutes or until browned.

Carefully add in 1 head of chopped cabbage. It is going to seem like a lot, but I promise you it wilts down quicky. You may need to add it in a little at a time to accommodate the size of your pan. Season with the same spices as before and stir it up really well. Also add in 1 cup of chicken broth.

Add the bacon in and stir it up really well again.

Once you have everything stirred up, place the lid on, turn the stove to low/medium heat and cook for 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes and cabbage are desired tenderness. Make sure to stir occasionally.

Pile your plate up and enjoy every bite!

Recipe:

  • 10 slices of chopped bacon
  • 1.5 lbs chopped yukon gold potatoes
  • 1 diced yellow onion
  • 1 tbs Kinder’s Garlic Sea Salt and Butter Seasoning
  • 1 tbs onion powder
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 tbs Slap ya Mama Seasoning
  • 1 head chopped cabbage
  • 1 cup chicken broth or water

Directions:

  1. Brown the bacon in a deep skillet and use a slotted spoon to remove from the pan and set aside, but do not discard the grease.
  2. Add the potatoes and onion to the grease, season with the listed spices and cook until they are browned, about 5-10 minutes.
  3. Add the chopped cabbage, season with the same spices and the water and stir it up really well. It will seem like a lot and you may need to add it in small batches to accommodate the size of your pan. It is going to wilt down a lot though.
  4. Add the bacon back in and give it another good mix.
  5. Place the lid on and turn the heat to medium.
  6. Cook for about 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes and cabbage are desired tenderness. Be sure to stir occasionally.
