Sausage Gravy

November 21, 2022

Sausage gravy is one of my FAVORITE breakfast foods! I could say, though, that gravy of all kinds is one of my favorite food groups! There is just something about a thick, rich sauce blanketing my food that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside just thinking about it. And to top it off, it is incredibly easy to make! The key is to use your favorite flavor of breakfast sausage. I have and always will love Jimmy Dean’s but there are so many options to choose from, so use whichever one you like!

How to Make Sausage Gravy

Put 1 lb of breakfast sausage in a skillet over medium heat.

Brown it until completely cooked, stirring often to break it up into small crumbles.

Stir in 4 tbsp of butter. Once it is melted, slowly add in the flour a little at a time.

Let that cook down for 3-4 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste. Make sure to stir it continuously.

Start stirring in the milk, a little at a time, stirring continuously.

Stir continuously until it comes to a gentle boil then immediately remove it from the heat. This is when it is going to thicken up. Be sure to do this over medium heat so you do not scorch it. Continuously stirring is also important for that reason.

Season with salt, a lot of black pepper and if you like a little kick add some red pepper flakes or cajun seasoning. I do not measure the seasonings, but start with a little bit of salt and you can always add more when it is finished if needed.

And just like that you have a wonderful, creamy and rich sausage gravy that can be used for a multitude of dishes. If the gravy is thicker than you like, add some more milk to it.

Sausage Gravy

Course Breakfast
Cuisine American
Servings 6

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Breakfast Sausage
  • 4 tbsp Butter
  • 1/3 Cup All Purpose Flour
  • 2.5-3 Cups Whole Milk
  • 1-2 tsp Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Red Pepper Flakes or Cajun Seasoning, optional

Instructions

  • Brown your sausage in a skillet over medium heat. Once it is fully cooked add in the butter and melt it down.
  • Stir in the flour a little bit at a time, stirring constantly. Once you have it all added in, cook for about 5 minutes to get the raw flour taste cooked out.
  • Bring the heat to low/medium. Now slowly pour in the milk, stirring constantly.
  • Keep stirring until it comes to a boil then remove it from the heat. This is when it is going to get thick. Season with salt and pepper and the red pepper flakes if desired. Start slow with the salt. You can always add more but you can't take away! Just season it until you get it to your desired taste.
  • If you want it thinner, you can add more milk.
  • Serve over biscuits or toast or use in any of your favorite breakfast recipes!

Notes

This can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
The leftovers will be extremely thick. I like to add some milk and reheat it on the stove in a saucepan.
This is great to use in so many recipes!
