Ingredients You’ll Need
- Ground beef (1 lb) – The hearty base of the dish. You can substitute Italian sausage for more flavor or ground turkey for a lighter option.
- Diced onion – Adds sweetness and depth.
- ½ green bell pepper, diced – Classic lasagna-style flavor and subtle texture.
- Garlic (5 cloves, minced) – Fresh garlic makes a huge difference here.
- Tomato paste (1 tablespoon) – Deepens the marinara flavor and adds richness.
- Fire & Smoke Society Spicy Italian Calabrian Chili Blend (1 tablespoon) – Adds mild heat with a subtle kick. You can substitute regular Italian seasoning if you prefer no heat.
- Morton Nature’s Seasons (1 teaspoon) – Adds balanced savory flavor.
- Garlic powder (1 teaspoon) – Boosts the garlic flavor.
- Onion powder (1 teaspoon) – Enhances overall depth.
- Sugar (1 teaspoon) – Balances the acidity of the marinara.
- Marinara sauce (24 ounces) – The saucy base. Use your favorite jar.
- Bowtie pasta (12 ounces) – Holds the sauce beautifully. Any short-shaped pasta like rotini, penne, shells, or elbows will work. Raviolis or tortellini are great options too!
- Chicken broth (2½ cups) – Cooks the pasta directly in the skillet and adds flavor.
- Cottage cheese (1 cup) – Gives it that lasagna-style creamy layer. Ricotta works perfectly too.
- Freshly shredded mozzarella (2 cups) – Melts into that golden bubbly top. You can skip this if you prefer it without the broiled cheese topping.
- Dried parsley – For a simple finishing touch.
How To Make Lasagna-Style Hamburger Helper

Start by heating a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic. Cook until the meat is fully browned and the vegetables are softened. Drain off the excess grease.

Next, stir in the tomato paste and let it cook for about three minutes. This step deepens the flavor and keeps the sauce from tasting flat. Now sprinkle in the Calabrian chili blend, Nature’s Seasons, garlic powder, onion powder, and sugar. Stir well so the spices coat the meat evenly.
Pour in the entire jar of marinara sauce and mix thoroughly.

Add the dry bowtie pasta directly into the skillet along with 2½ cups of chicken broth. Stir well and bring the mixture to a boil.

When the pasta is fully cooked, remove the lid and stir in one cup of cottage cheese (or ricotta). This gives you that classic lasagna-style creaminess throughout.

Spread 2 cups of freshly shredded mozzarella evenly over the top.
Place the skillet under a high broil setting with the oven rack positioned in the middle of the oven. Broil for about 4 minutes, just until the cheese is golden brown and bubbly. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Remove from the oven and — this part is important — let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. It will look slightly soupy at first, but it thickens beautifully as it rests.

Tips for Success
- Stir occasionally while simmering so the pasta doesn’t stick.
- Freshly shredded mozzarella melts much better than pre-shredded.
- Letting it rest is key for the perfect consistency.
- If you like extra heat, add red pepper flakes.
- If you prefer it without the broiled topping, simply stir in the mozzarella and serve.
Serving Suggestions
This pairs perfectly with:
- Garlic bread
- A simple house salad
- Roasted vegetables
- Or even just by itself in a big cozy bowl
