Garbage Bread

October 18, 2022

Please don’t let the name of this dish throw you off. Garbage Bread is a recipe I found many years ago and this is the name it had so I didn’t feel the need to change it. It is a favorite of mine to make for game days because it makes a great finger food, plus it is absolutely delicious! But it is also a perfect dish for dinner any time. The filling I use is similar to a cheeseburger and I make a dressing similar to 1000 Island dressing for dipping. I will show you the recipe I use, but feel free to play around with it and use whatever you like!

You will start by browning 1.5 lbs of ground beef. Drain the grease then season with garlic powder, onion powder and salt and pepper.

Add about 1/4 cup of ketchup and 2 tbs of mustard.

Then add 1/2 cup of dill pickle relish or some chopped dill pickles.

Add 6 slices of cooked crumbled bacon and give it all a good mix.

Add 2 cups of fresh grated sharp cheddar and 1 cup of fresh grated pepper jack cheese. Mix that all together really well until all the cheese is melted then set aside and let cool slightly.

Roll out one package of canned pizza crust into a rectangular shape on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. (You can also use homemade pizza crust, but I am lazy and I like the canned stuff. I used Pillsbury. Put the meat mixture into the center of the crust.

Now cut 1 inch slits along both sides of the dough.

Fold the slits over the filling going from one side to the other making sure to seal the ends to prevent the mixture from leaking.

Once you have the sides folded over, brush the top with about 2-3 tbs of melted butter.

Sprinkle on 1 cup each of the same cheeses you used for the filling.

Then sprinkle some parsley on top. This is simply for looks and not a necessary step but I do think it looks better with it.

You are going to bake it at 425 degrees for about 15-20 minutes. You want to make sure the bottom of the crust is crispy.

Let it cool for about 10 minutes then cut into slices about 1 inch thick.

Serve with 1000 Island dressing for dipping and enjoy!

  • This was SO good!! I used fry sauce instead of ketchup and it turned out delicious! Next time I’ll only use 2 cups of cheddar instead of 3 to try to cut back a little on calories and still be delicous! Thanks for the recipe!
